Innova Groove Review – High-Speed Distance Driver for Maximum Glide and Distance

The Innova Groove is a high-speed distance driver specifically designed for players who want to reach maximum distance potential. Known for its unique groove-shaped rim, this disc earned its name and its reputation for being one of the most intriguing molds in Innova’s lineup. While it’s not the easiest disc to master for beginners, it can produce incredible distance for experienced players who can handle its speed and stability.

When it comes to Speed 13 distance drivers, the Groove stands out for its combination of speed, glide, and control. It features a speed rating of 13, a glide rating of 6, a turn of –2, and a fade of 2. These numbers show that the Groove has the potential to soar through the air with great carry, while still finishing with a predictable fade at the end of its flight.

Design and Feel – The Groove Rim

What makes the Groove truly unique is its rim design. The small indentation (or “groove”) molded into the bottom of the rim is meant to reduce drag and improve the aerodynamics of the disc, allowing for faster, longer flights. The feel of the rim is unlike most other discs — some players love the way it fits into their grip, while others find it takes time to get used to. This groove design contributes to its impressive glide but also demands precise release angles to perform at its best.

Flight Performance – Long Distance with the Right Throw

During distance tests, the Groove performed very well on forehand (sidearm) throws, ranking second among other Speed 13 discs for forehand distance. However, this disc is highly sensitive to the release angle — slight mistakes can cause it to turn too much or fade too soon. When thrown cleanly, though, the Groove absolutely flies far and fast, achieving exceptional distance with minimal effort once it’s in motion.

In my first set of 10 throws, I managed to get two throws that exceeded 300 feet, which is quite an impressive distance for a player with average arm speed. The Groove’s high glide (6) means it stays in the air longer, giving you that satisfying, soaring flight that keeps pushing forward even when it seems like it should start fading.

Best Use – Who Should Throw the Groove?

The Innova Groove is not recommended for brand-new disc golfers. Its high-speed rating and demanding flight characteristics make it better suited for intermediate and advanced players who already have solid throwing form and arm speed. For players with powerful backhand or forehand throws, the Groove can unlock amazing distance potential — especially in open courses where you can fully unleash your power.

For players who throw primarily forehand, the Groove is a solid choice thanks to its stability and reliable fade. It can handle torque and speed well without turning into a roller. On the other hand, beginners or players with slower arms may find it too overstable or inconsistent.

Durability and Plastic Types

The Groove is available in several of Innova’s premium plastics, such as Champion and Star, offering excellent grip and long-lasting durability. These plastics can withstand heavy use and maintain the disc’s flight characteristics even after dozens of rounds. The premium plastic versions tend to be slightly more overstable, which is ideal for players who like predictable fade and control at the end of their flight.

Final Thoughts – A Disc for Power Throwers

Overall, the Innova Groove distance driver is a power disc built for players who want serious distance with great glide. It may take some time to learn, but once you find the right release and arm speed, the Groove can become one of your longest-flying discs. Its aerodynamic design, durable plastic options, and impressive distance potential make it a unique and exciting addition to any advanced disc golfer’s bag.

If you’re looking for a long-range driver that can push your limits and deliver powerful forehand and backhand throws, the Innova Groove deserves a test throw. With patience and proper form, this disc can truly “get into the groove” — and take your distance game to the next level.
