Introduction: Distance Testing at Willow Park

Today, Alan and I visited the softball field at Willow Park for a comprehensive Distance Testing session with his newest distance drivers. The experience was both exciting and educational, giving us a deeper understanding of how throwing technique affects distance and control. As intermediate-level disc golfers, we were eager to see measurable improvement, and while not every throw went as planned, the data we gathered was invaluable.

Our Throwing Method

For this Distance Testing, we used a simple and consistent method: we set up a line of cones in an arc from a fixed launch point and focused purely on distance using forehand throws.
Each of the seven distance drivers was thrown five times, totaling 70 throws overall. This allowed us to observe the flight consistency, angle adjustments, and differences between disc models.

Key Observations from the Distance Testing

1. Height doesn’t always mean distance.
We quickly learned that throwing higher didn’t result in greater distance. Discs thrown lower — just above horizon level — consistently flew farther and maintained better glide.

2. Release angle matters.
When a distance driver is thrown completely parallel to the ground, it tends to fade right and drop quickly. The best results came from a slightly left-angled release, which allowed the disc to curve naturally and continue flying forward before landing softly.
